Devoted Taylor Swift fans crash the AMC app in a mad dash to secure tickets to the big-screen showcase of her Eras Tour.
After Taylor Swift broke the news on Thursday morning (August 31) in an Instagram post that a concert film showcasing her iconic Eras Tour will premiere in theaters on October 13, the superstar’s avid fans rushed to the AMC app to secure tickets.
Despite AMC anticipating the high demand and announcing that it “bolstered” its ticket server capacity to handle additional traffic, the rush led to the app crashing or failing to load for many users.
“#TSTheErasTourFilm has overwhelmed the AMC app to such an extent there’s now a wait to simply have it load… HER POWER,” tweeted one fan.
AMC issued a press release detailing the steps taken to help “ensure the theatrical event is accessible and affordable for all who want to attend.”
AMC locations within the US will offer four showtimes daily from Thursdays to Sundays once the film opens in October. Tickets for the event will be offered at a lower price than usual, with adult tickets priced at $19.89 as a nod to Swift (as opposed to the typical cost of as much as $24.99).
Fans purchasing a ticket for the “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” film may also receive a free official mini-poster while supplies last. Additionally, fans can add a collectible popcorn tub and cup to their purchase.
Swifties will stop at nothing to secure tickets to see their favorite star, having broken Ticketmaster’s record for the most tickets sold for an artist in a single day when more than 2 million tickets were sold on the platform for her Eras Tour on November 15 last year.
The demand was such that Ticketmaster’s servers were overloaded with traffic; the site predicted that Swift would have to perform over 900 stadium shows — around 20 times the number of shows she had announced at the time — to meet the fan demand based on site traffic that day.
